Sofia Woodruff isn’t the kind of artist who bursts into the room demanding attention. She prefers the little things. A cup of tea over trends, poetry and short stories over noise, and quiet walks over crowded spaces. In those tiny moments, her music begins to take shape.

Recently, Sofia’s social media presence has been steadily growing. While the attention is welcome, it wasn’t something she expected – and she sees this as merely the beginning.

Sofia is adamant that music is her one true calling. “I always saw [music] as something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I think I’ve felt so much more strongly about it after I graduated college because I was never super passionate about what I got my degree in.”

Her relationship with music began at just three years old. “I grew up on music. I started out playing the keyboard and piano and went to summer camp for that.” After her initial foray into the musical world, Sofia took an extended break during her teen years. Eventually, she would rediscover her love for playing instruments. “In 2022, I picked up the guitar again, and I’ve been playing pretty consistently since.” Despite a solid passion for music, it wasn’t until she picked up the guitar that Sofia hit the ground running. “My mom plays the guitar; the one she never used was [what] got me back into music, actually.” Now, she’s more driven than ever.

While some artists want visibility, Sofia simply wants to live and love music. “My dream is just to put out music. I’ve never thought about the level of success.” Her process for achieving her dream is unique. As she puts it, “One of the biggest struggles I’ve had is finding my own sound. How can I get that original sound in a world with so many artists who already have their own original sound?” Like many artists before her, Sofia’s first challenge is finding herself and what she wants her sound to be.

When asked about her dream collaboration, Sofia only had one name in mind. “I would love to work with Clairo. The way her albums have evolved is really cool to see. She moved from kind of this bedroom pop to a jazz vibe. It’s SO good,” she added, laughing. Sofia said she’s inspired by the way Clairo operates, but makes sure to establish space between inspiration and her own sound.

Sofia’s favorite thing about music is the emotion it can evoke. Songs that make her feel a certain way inspire her infinitely more than songs that chart well. “Sometimes I’ll hear a song and I’ll go, ‘Wow, my goal is to write a song that makes me feel how this song makes me feel.’ When it comes to writing, I don’t usually analyze [a song] down to its core. I don’t want a copy and paste of anything else.”

Sofia describes her unreleased songs as “very honest” — genre-fluid but emotionally consistent. Whether layered over soft guitar riffs or fuller progressions, her music centers on vulnerability. She’s working on putting out her own music, but doesn’t shy away from admitting the process can be intimidating. “My songs are very representative of me as a person, and that’s why I’m so attached to them.” Pinpointing the right lyrics for her emotional chord progressions can be difficult. “For me, it’s figuring out how to put how I feel into words. A song has lyrics and an instrumental. Because I put so much emphasis on how I feel in a song without lyrics, I always try to make the riffs and progressions first. I can have trouble with lyrics sometimes and formulating my words around those progressions.”

With such rapid growth on her social media platforms, Sofia notices the community quickly forming around her. “When I started posting, I never thought I’d have this kind of following and support. I get so many DMs about people telling me how much they love my content. It’s cool to see this community of people who are actively involved in music, and I’m so happy I can help them in their own journey. I just hope [my content] makes them feel a little better. I always use music as a way to feel, so if I can help other people feel through music too, that’s a win for me personally.”

Sofia offers a piece of advice for anyone considering music as a career choice or personal dream: “If you’re thinking of doing it, just do it. When I started back up around 2022, I had no serious knowledge of music, and making sure I liked what I was doing while still pushing myself was one of the best things I could’ve done.” This process taught her to “stay consistent,” and through that consistency, she’s evolved into a better version of herself as an artist.

As she prepares to release her own music, one thing is certain: Sofia Woodruff isn’t chasing stardom — she’s chasing sincerity. And in a world oversaturated with noise, that might be exactly what sets her apart.
